Philadelphia Union 1-2 Columbus Crew
August 5, 2010
I expected this to be one of the Union’s tougher games, as Columbus is the best team in the East, and it did not disappoint. The Union had a tough time getting anything going offensively, and scored their only goal on a penalty by Sebastien LeToux. Columbus are a team that is very difficult to break down defensively, and the Union players were all too easily pushed off the ball. The Union also failed to finish off the chances they did have. We got a taste of how badly the Union have relied on the injured Danny Mwanga recently going forward. These factors, accompanied by some bad passing and sluggish play by the Union, led to the inevitable disappointing result.
The team announced before the game that it had signed Colombian central defender Juan Diego Gonzalez Alzate. Based on my previous comments, you know that I was not surprised by this. Again, one can argue that both Columbus goals were soft, preventable, goals. Hopefully, a stronger, more consistent back four can address this going forward.
It was a nice night, although still somewhat humid, with a good crowd for a week night. The Crew had a very strong supporters group at the game. Very impressive, given the distance and the fact it was a weeknight. I have added my two cents on the subject of “PPL Park at Sunset” below. Purdy, if I do say so myself.
